Aging in Place
The “Aging in Place” initiative is a community needs assessment studying quality of life issues along various parameters for seniors living in the Newport County region. In 2011, in partnership with the Edward King House, Child & Family, the Housing Authority of the City of Newport, Newport Partnership for Families, John Matson Consulting, and Newport County Chamber of Commerce, Visiting Nurse Home & Hospice took the lead in securing funding from the Newport County Fund of the Rhode Island Foundation and the Rhode Island Department of Health to conduct a study through surveys, focus groups, and key informant interviews of 550 seniors over 65 years old and approaching seniors 50-64 years old.
The needs assessment is the first step toward the objective that Newport County be a model community that supports aging in place with coordinated, cost-effective, and excellent client-centered services for elders and their families.
